A potential disaster was averted after a student at a Baltimore County high school was caught with a loaded handgun after investigators were tipped off, police say.
Sparrows Point High School Assistant Principal Renee Crabbe issued a letter to parents on Monday afternoon advising that a student was caught with a handgun following a search earlier that day.
Crabbe said that administrators were tipped off that the student was bringing a weapon to class, and a School Resource Officer assigned to the building was able to track down the suspected student, and the weapon was recovered without any further incident.
The student was apprehended and "taken to a local precinct," she said, noting that "possession of any type of weapon on school property is a serious offense and the student was arrested."
No injuries were reported.
"As with this case, it is important for all of us - students and parents alike - to inform school staff or police any time you or your child sees, hears, or reads anything that is suspicious or that may pose a threat to the school or its students," Crabbe added.
"We all have a role to play in ensuring that our school remains a safe and secure learning environment for our children."
There was an additional police presence around the high school following the incident, though officials said it was purely as a precaution.
"I ask that you speak with your children and remind them that weapons of any kind are not allowed on school property," Crabbe continued.
"Students who are found to be in possession of a weapon will face serious school and legal consequences."
